PSE Installing New LED Streetbulbs & Streetlights - Update

PSE is planning on replacing, at PSE's expense, all of the streetbulbs in Medina. The halogen bulbs will be swapped out and replaced with energy-efficient LED bulbs, and some of the light fixtures will be changed, as well.

Two different samples, a 4000K Cobrahead, and a 3000K luminaire, were installed near City Hall for review and consideration by the residents.  (The 4000K Cobrahead is at the corner of NE 8th and Overlake Drive West, and the 3000K luminaire is on the left/east across from Medina Beach Park.)

In response to comments and concerns from the residents that the installed samples were too harsh, blinding, not in keeping with the character of the community, etc., along with concerns about excess night-time street lighting on sleep quality and concerns about increased cancer risk from high levels of ambient outdoor light, Alex Morcos and I met with City Manager, Mike Sauerwein, and the City's new Public Works Director, Ryan Osada, and they agreed to advocate on behalf of the Medina residents with PSE.  They have asked PSE to install different samples, with softer 2700 Kelvin color, which should be installed soon. (Thank you, Ryan, for advocating for us, and thank you, Alex Morcos, for researching the resident-friendly options available from the PSE suppliers and supplying the specifications to the City staff.)

We are committed to an iterative process, and we are leveraging data from Stanford as well as lessons learned and advice from the International Dark Sky Association.

We will let you know once the new sample lights are installed.  And then we would appreciate your feedback.  Thank you.
